“Shady Grove” is a traditional Appalachian courting song, likely from eastern Kentucky around 1900, passed down by ear among old-time and bluegrass musicians. Its modal melody may be older than its words, and its verses change from singer to singer. Kept alive by artists like Jean Ritchie and Doc Watson, it remains a living song that each performer makes their own.
